Old reading, new reading.
Dec 18th, 2006 by Jason
As the nights have drawn in I often find myself sitting down comfortably with a good book. Moving house recently allowed me to re-discover some old favourites and an unpleasant cold gave me the excuse to sit in front of the fire and read.
Having spent the last several months reading what my partner would describe as ‘dry technical manuals’ and studying I felt I could allow myself some science-fiction. Packing up my books pre-move I found my copy of Orion by Ben Bova. Unfortunately, this is part of a series of 5 books (4 of which I own although 1 seems to have been lost), so I have had to read the 3 currently to hand and order the last one in the series.
While I wait for Orion Among the Stars to arrive I have started reading a real book - News From No Man’s Land by John Simpson. I’m only 30 pages in but his writing style, honesty and humour have already put this in my top ten books that I read in 2006 list. If you want to learn a little of real life, and a little of how the media works both in this county and abroad, I can recommend it highly. How can I say this after 30 pages? - my partner read it first and has already shared some of the best quotes from the book! I’m glad that she did though, because I would not normally have picked the book up. Prediction for 2007 - I will be reading more biographies!
