Valentine’s Day - Better Late Than Never
Feb 20th, 2007 by Jason
Neither my partner, nor myself, feel compelled to degrade ourselves by joining the shallow, overly commercial holiday which fills the uneventful first quarter between New Year and Easter, otherwise known as Valentines day.
To me, Valentines day serves as a reminder to show appreciation to my partner, for what they mean to us. The hustle-bustle of modern life can sometimes be overwhelming that the little effort to do something for someone else is lost in the desire to sit down and cabbage.
As work had kept me away from home during the week, we arranged to spend a long weekend together. My partner had an unused voucher, won over Christmas while supporting a charity function, for a stay at the Barcelona Hotel. The catch was that it had to be used on a Sunday night. No problem, we both took Monday off work.
While the menu in the hotel restaurant was enticingly extravagant, we decided that we could get more value with pub grub, so off we set.
The nearby Hourglass offers a reduced menu on Sunday nights but I was extremely happy with my rib-eye steak and my partner had no complaints about her Sea Bass. The Adnams Broadside flowed well, and to mark the evening as a special occasion we finished with a couple of rounds of shorts.
The hotel room was fantastic, with smooth quality sheets on a queen size bed, and a clean bathroom featuring a power shower that could have filled the bath in about 2 minutes! Environmentally sound, no.
Luxury… yes!
