The Audi RS 4 - Not For Wimps
Apr 5th, 2007 by Jason
I’ve just spent my lunchtime drooling over the Audi website. There are many shiny objects of desire but if I was in the market for a saloon car with style, I’d choose an Audi RS 4.
Anyone who knows anything about cars dreams of owning a car with a V8 engine, and the RS 4 comes complete with 4.2 litres of free-revving V8. It’s not just about the power, or the engineering… it’s the sound.
As a young lad, my father had two friends that owned V8 cars. One was an ex-copper with a Range-Rover and the other, an er… independent money lender with an American Trans Am Pontiac. Both of my fathers friends were only too happy to demonstrate what their cars were capable of.
Having survived to adulthood, I look around for the modern equivalents and find supercars like the Audi RS4 and S 6 with it’s phenomenal 5.2 litre V10 to be the muscle cars of choice. There are others but somehow they seem more refined than the Audi’s, somehow failing to capture the image of the raw power muscle car. Perhaps it’s all marketing crap - I haven’t actually driven one yet.
I have driven an A4 TDI and even like that was out of this world compared to regular cars. Motor vehicle technology has really moved on over the last decade. Not just in all the electronics but in the quality of the ride and the whole driving experience.
Strangely, this ultimate road racing muscle-bound high-performance four-wheel-drive supercar has, wait for it…
…
a ‘Sport‘ button!
WTF?
Do you know what it does yet?
The Audi Website explains:
“Summon up engine strength at the push of a button. Seat side sections draw in, accelerator pedal characteristics change and the engine sound becomes sportier.“
Does only half the engine work unless you push the button?

And what about the seat squeezing your arse cheeks together - is that to prevent soiling of the upholstery as you step on the gas to discover that the accelerator pedal characteristics have changed!
Seriously though, his technology should be in every car!
I’m off to Halford’s at the weekend for a Sport button for my Metro.
